The Mahindra Thar is available in two main variants: AX Opt and LX. You can choose between a hard-top or a soft-top version. Initially, colors like white and orange were mostly seen with the Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD) option. Now, Mahindra offers these popular colors, including white and orange, with the 4×4 versions as well. Other color options for the Mahindra Thar include Black, Red, Aquamarine, Rocky Beige, and a yellow-type color.

Exterior Design and Features of the Mahindra Thar

The front of the Mahindra Thar features a signature Mahindra grille with a black finish. It has normal halogen headlights, with DRLs (Daytime Running Lights) above and indicators placed below in the bumper. The front bumper is large and solid, featuring “Thar” branding. Halogen fog lamps are also present. The vehicle includes an engine guard and suspension setup, which is essential for off-roading. The bonnet is secured by two black clips.

The Thar rides on muscular 18-inch alloy wheels. The tire size is 255/65 R18, and it has disc brakes at the front. You will see “Thar” branding in many places, including on the ORVMs (Outside Rear View Mirrors), which are manually foldable and electrically adjustable. A side footstep is provided to help with entry and exit.

The rear design of the Mahindra Thar is also muscular. It features a large 18-inch alloy wheel as a spare. The rear has drum brakes. You’ll find a clear ‘4×4’ badge, sometimes with red accents. The LED taillights also have “Thar” branding. The car comes with a rear fog light but does not have a rear wiper. The roof design varies based on the hard-top or soft-top option. The rear bumper is black and includes two reverse parking sensors. There is no reverse parking camera. Handles are finished in black.

Mahindra Thar Dimensions and Off-Road Capability

The Mahindra Thar has impressive dimensions for an off-road SUV. It measures 3985 mm in length, 1855 mm in width, and 1844 mm in height. The wheelbase is 2450 mm. A high ground clearance of 226 mm ensures it can tackle rough terrains easily.

Practicality and Boot Space

The boot space in the Mahindra Thar is compact, suitable for small items. A small trolley bag might fit if placed at an angle. For more luggage space, the rear seats can be folded flat. This is especially useful if only two people are traveling.

Mahindra Thar Interior Comfort and Features

The interior of the Mahindra Thar features an all-black dashboard design, which is rugged and practical for off-road adventures. The front seats are fabric, offering good comfort for off-roading, and feature “Thar” branding. They come with height adjustment and recline options. Accessing the rear seats requires sliding the front seat forward. The second row is a 4-seater setup with adjustable headrests and seatbelts. However, space in the second row is average, and it may not be the most comfortable for long journeys.

The door panels are black and include controls for ORVMs and space for a 1-liter bottle. The steering wheel features the new Mahindra logo, cruise control on the right side, and infotainment and telephone controls on the left. It is tilt-adjustable. The instrument cluster is analogue, with an RPM meter, speedometer (up to 180 km/h), and a multi-information display (MID) in the center. The MID shows various details like mileage, range, trip info, and 4×4 settings.

The infotainment system is centrally located and provides adventure statistics, off-road information, and connectivity via Android Auto, USB, and AUX. It also includes four speakers and two tweeters. Below the infotainment system are glossy black AC vents and manual AC controls. Other controls include switches for airbags, seatbelts, a hazard light, traction control, and central locking. Below these, you’ll find a 12V charging socket and some storage space.

This petrol variant comes with a 6-speed manual transmission and a separate lever for the 4×4 system (4 High and 4 Low). There are two glass holders and a manual handbrake. The glove box is small, suitable for documents like RC and insurance papers. The sun visors include a vanity mirror on the passenger side and a ticket holder on the driver’s side. The cabin light is white. Grab handles are provided for stability during off-roading.

Engine Performance and Specifications

The Mahindra Thar LX Petrol variant is powered by a 1.5-liter engine. This engine produces 150 bhp (brake horsepower) and 300 Nm (Newton-meters) of torque. It comes with a 6-speed manual transmission. For those preferring diesel, there is a 2.2-liter mHawk engine option. The diesel engine delivers 130 bhp of power and 300 Nm of torque. The fuel tank capacity for the Thar is 57 liters. The petrol variant offers a mileage of approximately 12 km/l.

Mahindra Thar Safety Features

Safety is a key aspect of the Mahindra Thar. It is equipped with essential safety features such as ABS (Anti-lock Braking System) with EBD (Electronic Brakeforce Distribution), dual airbags, reverse parking sensors, speed alert, ESP (Electronic Stability Program), and TPMS (Tire Pressure Monitoring System).

Overall Impressions of the Mahindra Thar

The Mahindra Thar stands out as a true off-roading SUV. Its muscular looks, strong dimensions, and powerful engine options make it a perfect choice for adventure seekers.
