The updated Tata Nexon is here, a 5-star rated muscular SUV in its segment. We are looking at its base model, now called the Smart Optional.
Key Updates & Pricing
One significant change in this updated model is the transmission. It now comes with a 5-speed manual transmission, unlike the previous 6-speed. This update also brings a slight reduction in its price. The base model now starts from 8 lakh (ex-showroom), down from 8.10 lakh previously. Additionally, the company has now introduced a diesel engine option for the base model, which was not available before.
Exterior Design & Features
From the front, the Tata Nexon looks muscular. It features the Tata logo and a gloss black front grill. Integrated indicators and DRLs (Daytime Running Lights) are present. The car comes with LED headlights, but fog lamps are not included in this base variant. The lower grill is completely blacked out. The Nexon offers a substantial 208 mm of ground clearance.
Looking at the side profile, you’ll notice 16-inch steel rims. Wheel covers are not provided in this base model. The outside mirrors are finished in matte black, and the car features body cladding. The car is equipped with disc brakes at the front and drum brakes at the rear. The tire section is 195/60 R16 radial. The fuel tank capacity is approximately 44 liters.
At the rear, the Nexon features connected tail lights, though only a part of them illuminates in this base model. The bumper is black, and you can see the rear suspension and exhaust pipe. The car’s direct competitors include the Mahindra XUV300, Maruti Suzuki Brezza, Kia Sonet, and Hyundai Venue.
Interior Comfort & Technology
The base model uses a manual physical key; remote central locking is not included. For convenience, the front doors have power window controls, while the rear doors feature manual window winders. The dashboard is entirely black, and the seats are made of fabric. The driver’s seat allows for recline adjustment but does not offer height adjustment.
Inside, you’ll find a full digital instrument cluster. It displays an RPM meter, fuel gauge, and temperature bars. The multi-information display (MID) shows trip details, average mileage, and range. The steering wheel is a D-cut, 2-spoke design with an illuminated Tata logo, and it is tilt-adjustable. Manual controls for headlights and wipers are also present. A touchscreen infotainment system or audio system is not included in this base model.
Other interior features include manual AC controls and a hazard light switch. There’s also an internal switch to unlock the boot. The car comes with a 5-speed manual transmission. A 12V charging outlet is provided, but there is no USB port in this base variant. Three drive modes are available: City, Eco, and Sport. A manual handbrake and glass holders are present, but an armrest is not offered in the base model. The front cabin features a white LED roof light. The co-driver side sun visor includes a vanity mirror, while the driver’s side has a ticket holder.
The rear seats are 100% foldable and offer adjustable headrests for passengers. Although there are no rear AC vents in the base model, there is a dedicated space to keep small items. The car offers good legroom, knee room, and thigh support for two rear passengers; a third person might find it a bit tight.
