2024 Mahindra Thar RWD Review: Price, Features, and Top Model 4×2 Details

Mahindra Thar 4×2 RWD: Features, Engine & Price Guide

The Mahindra Thar is a popular SUV known for its strong build and adventure-ready design. This article focuses on the 4×2 Rear Wheel Drive (RWD) variant, particularly the Petrol Automatic model. The Thar is available in AX Optional and LX variants, with LX being the top model. A soft top option is also available.

Striking Front Design

The front of the Thar 4×2 RWD features a black grille. It has round headlights, and the indicators come with daytime running lights (DRLs). Fog lamps are placed below. The bumper is completely blacked out and includes large Thar branding. Below, you’ll find the front engine and suspension setup, complete with an engine guard. This vehicle offers a great ground clearance of 226 millimeters. It also comes with dual wipers and washers.

Robust Side Profile

From the side, the Thar RWD shows off 18-inch alloy wheels, which also carry Thar branding. It comes with CEAT tires, with a tire profile of 255/65 R18. The indicators are placed on the wide, black fender. This model has the mStallion Turbo Di Petrol engine, and its badge is visible. It features a power antenna. The outside mirrors can be manually folded and are electrically adjustable; they are finished in matte black and also have Thar branding. The door handles are also in a matte black finish. Currently, this is a 2-door option, but a 5-door variant is expected to launch in a couple of months.

Distinctive Rear View

At the rear, the fuel filler cap is located on the side and can be opened with the key. The fuel tank capacity is 57 liters. The rear wheels have drum brakes, while the front wheels have disc brakes. Thar branding is present in multiple places. A fifth alloy wheel serves as the spare wheel, fitted with CEAT tires and featuring Thar and Mahindra branding. The tail lights are LED. There is a high-mount stop lamp. The rear bumper includes two reverse parking sensors, but a reverse parking camera is not standard and can be added later as an accessory. Reflectors are also present. This model has an “Automatic” badge, and a “Rear Wheel Drive” badge helps identify it as the 4×2 variant. The exhaust pipe design for the petrol engine is also unique compared to the diesel variant.

Interior Comfort and Technology

The interior of the Thar 4×2 RWD has a rough and tough, solid design, much like the 4×4 variant, with the main differences being the engine options and the absence of a 4×4 lever. The seats are made of fabric. The dashboard is entirely black and uses hard plastic material, making it easy to clean, especially after off-roading.

The instrument cluster includes a car meter, speedometer, and a multi-information display (MID) screen in the middle, which shows various details like direction, fuel level, temperature, audio information, trip details, and average mileage. The steering wheel features the Mahindra logo, media controls, cruise control, and voice command options, with a glossy black finish around the controls.

The center console houses a 7 to 8-inch touchscreen system. It supports Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, USB, and AUX connectivity. It also includes an “Adventure” mode for off-road/on-road information and an iCall feature. The round AC vents have a glossy black finish. Below, you’ll find manual AC controls, information about seat belts and airbags, a hazard light switch, traction control, and hill descent control buttons, along with a lock/unlock button. There is a USB port, an AUX port, and a 12-volt charging outlet, plus a space to keep your phone.

This variant comes with an automatic transmission. There is a small storage space, front power window controls, two cup holders, and a handbrake. A grab handle is provided on the passenger side for support. The glove box offers minimal space, suitable for documents. The inside rearview mirror is manually adjustable. The driver’s sun visor has a ticket holder, and the passenger’s sun visor has a vanity mirror. The hardtop roof has white LED lighting, two speakers, and two tweeters, making a total of four speakers and two tweeters.

Accessing the rear seats involves sliding the front seat forward. The rear cabin does not have AC vents. Legroom and thigh support are average. There are two adjustable headrests and two seat belt points. The rear seats can be folded in a 50/50 split to increase boot space.

The boot space is accessed by opening two parts: first the lower part, then the glass panel. In its standing position, the boot space is small, about 80 to 100 liters, enough for small items. However, folding the 50/50 split rear seats completely flat can significantly expand the cargo area. The upcoming 5-door option is expected to provide more boot space.
