Mahindra Thar 4×4 Diesel: Features, Price, and More

The Mahindra Thar 4×4 Diesel variant is an excellent choice for off-road and adventure enthusiasts. This article provides a detailed look at its features, pricing, and overall appeal.

Pricing and Engine Options

The Mahindra Thar offers both diesel and petrol engine options. Prices start from ₹14.28 Lakhs, with top models reaching up to ₹18-19 Lakhs (on-road). The black color option gives the Thar a strong road presence, and many modification options are available to enhance its look.

The Thar is available in LX and AX Optional variants. However, the LX variant is more commonly seen, as the AX Optional is rarely available at showrooms.

Exterior Design and Features

The Mahindra Thar features its classic front grille and Mahindra badging. For customization, many modification options are available. The Thar comes with stock halogen headlights, with an option to upgrade to LED. Indicators and DRLs (Daytime Running Lights) are placed above the headlights.

The bumper has a grey finish, housing halogen fog lights and distinctive Thar branding. The bumper is very solid and durable. Below, an engine guard is visible. The Thar boasts an excellent ground clearance of 226 mm, making it suitable for any terrain, including mountains or muddy conditions.

The Thar rides on stylish 18-inch wheels, featuring front disc brakes and rear drum brakes. It has wide tires, and side indicators are placed on the fenders. You will also find ‘Thar Diesel’ badging. The outside rearview mirrors (ORVMs) are electrically adjustable and manually foldable, also featuring Thar branding. The hard top variant provides a solid roof.

The rear profile of the Mahindra Thar looks muscular. It is available in various color options including Black, Red, Grey, Marine, and Galaxy Grey. The 4×2 variant also offers White and Yellow color choices.

The Thar has a 57-liter diesel fuel tank. It features excellent body suspension travel. A soft-top option is also available, allowing the roof to be opened.

Dimensions and Build

The Mahindra Thar has a length of 3985 mm, a width of 1855 mm, and a height of 1844 mm. Its wheelbase measures 2450 mm. The Thar comes with a warranty of 2 years or 100,000 km. Many consider the Thar hard to beat when it comes to its dimensions, looks, and powerful engine.

At the rear, the Thar features LED taillights and branding. It has two rear parking sensors but does not include a reverse parking camera. Reflectors are also present. The high ground clearance is evident with the visible suspension setup. The spare wheel is also an alloy. The rear also includes a defogger and a stop lamp.

The boot gate opens in two parts: first the lower section, then the glass panel. Being an off-road vehicle, the boot space is designed accordingly. The rear seats can be folded flat to create more space for luggage. While ideal for off-roading, comfort is not its primary design focus.

Engine Performance

The 4×4 Diesel variant is powered by a 2.2-liter mHawk diesel engine, producing 130 BHP and 300 Nm of torque.

For the 4×2 variant, there is a 1.5-liter CRDe diesel engine that delivers 117 BHP and 300 Nm of torque, offering a mileage of 17-18 km/l.

The petrol option features a 2.0-liter mStallion engine, providing 150 BHP and 300 Nm of torque, with a mileage of 10-12 km/l.

Interior Features and Technology

The Thar comes with a remote key for locking and unlocking. The door panels have a silver finish with badging, along with ORVM controls, a bottle holder, and small storage space. The seats are black fabric with a leatherette touch and offer both height adjustment and recline options. For manual transmission variants, ABC pedals are present. Speakers are placed in the doors and the roof.

The interior features an analog instrument cluster with a digital display showing information like average, mileage, range, and trip details. The speedometer goes up to 180 km/h, and the cluster also displays ‘Thar’ branding. The steering wheel has the Mahindra logo, cruise control, and telephone controls.

At the center, there is a 7-inch infotainment system that supports Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, USB, and Aux connectivity. The system is paired with four speakers and tweeters. Note that a reverse parking camera is not included.

The cabin has round AC vents with manual AC controls. Other controls include seatbelt indicators, airbag on/off, traction control, and central lock/unlock buttons. A charging outlet, USB, and Aux port are available, along with a small storage area for a phone.

The Thar offers a 6-speed manual gearbox and also has a 6-speed automatic option. The 4×4 drive lever is a key feature, and a 4×2 variant is also available at a lower price point, potentially saving several lakhs compared to the 4×4 model. The handbrake and power window controls are located on the center console. There are also cup holders and grab handles for support during off-road adventures. The glove box provides limited space, suitable mostly for documents. An adjustable IRVM (Inside Rear View Mirror) with a ticket holder completes the interior.

Safety Features

For safety, the Mahindra Thar includes features like ABS (Anti-lock Braking System), airbags, reverse parking sensors, speed warning, and traction control.

Conclusion

The Mahindra Thar LX Manual variant (diesel) has an ex-showroom price of around ₹15.06 Lakhs, with the on-road price being approximately ₹17 Lakhs. The Thar stands out as a powerful and capable off-road vehicle, designed for adventure and built to tackle challenging terrains.
