2023 Tata Tiago XT Review: Safety Features, Performance, and Overview of the Best Hatchback

Tata Tiago XT CNG: A Smart and Safe Hatchback Choice

The Tata Tiago XT CNG variant stands out as a practical and safe hatchback. This car is recognized for its 4-star safety rating, ensuring good build quality for its passengers. Opting for the CNG variant brings the significant benefit of lower travel costs, making it an economical choice for daily commutes and longer journeys.

Pricing and Available Variants

The Tata Tiago starts from an ex-showroom price of ₹5,60,000. The top model can go up to ₹8,00,000+ on-road in Lucknow. Both petrol and CNG fuel options are available. The CNG variant comes exclusively with a manual transmission, while the petrol version offers both manual and automatic options.

The Tata Tiago is offered in five main variants:

  • XB
  • XT
  • XZ
  • XT Rhythm
  • XZ+

Exterior Design and Features

The Tiago XT CNG boasts a well-designed exterior.

Front Profile: The front features a distinctive grille with the Tata logo and a Tiago-inspired design. A chrome strip extends from the grille to the halogen headlights, which include a “follow-me-home” function. Indicators are placed on the side. This variant does not come with fog lamps, but they can be installed later. The lower grille is finished in black. The car offers a ground clearance of 170 mm. It is equipped with dual wipers and washers. The roof is plain, though a dual-tone option is available in other variants. A power antenna is located at the front, and a CNG sticker is visible.

Side Profile: The side mirrors are finished in gloss black, are electrically adjustable, and manually foldable. They also integrate the turn indicators. The car runs on 14-inch hyperstyle steel wheels, which give the appearance of alloy wheels, fitted with 175/65 R14 tires. It has disc brakes at the front and drum brakes at the rear. The door handles are body-colored. The Tiago has a wheelbase of 2400 mm, a length of 3765 mm, a width of 1677 mm, and a height of 1535 mm. The fuel tank capacity is 35 liters for petrol, and the CNG filler cap includes a sensor that prevents the car from starting if the cap is left open. The car is available in several color options, including White, Grey, Red, and Midnight Plum.

Rear Profile: The rear features the Tata logo and Tiago badge. This variant does not include a reverse parking camera or a touchscreen infotainment system; these features are available with the XZ Rhythm variant. Other rear details include a CNG sticker, “Vocal for Local” sticker, and an “i-CNG” badge. It has a high-mount stop lamp. Rear wiper and defogger are not present in this specific variant. The tail lights use regular halogen bulbs. The rear bumper houses two ultrasonic parking sensors and is body-colored. Due to the CNG tanks, the spare wheel is conveniently placed below the car.

Smart Boot Space with Twin Cylinder CNG

One of the standout features of the Tiago XT CNG is its innovative boot space management. The boot can be opened either with the key or using a lever inside the car. Tata has implemented a twin-cylinder CNG setup, featuring two 30+3 KG cylinders. This clever arrangement allows for a relatively clear boot space above the tanks, making it possible to store luggage like trolley bags or other small items. While the total boot space is 242 liters, it is approximately 50% utilized by the tanks. However, enough practical space remains for daily use. The car also comes with a puncture repair kit, a feature not commonly found in this segment. The rear seats are 100% foldable, and a parcel tray is not included but can be installed later.

Comfortable Interior and Dashboard

The Tiago XT CNG offers a comfortable and functional interior.

Rear Cabin: The rear doors have dual-tone trim, black finish door openers, power window controls, bottle holders, and speakers. The fabric seats feature a Tri-arrow design pattern and include seatbelts. There are no rear AC vents in any variant. The floor has a slight hump in the middle. Legroom, kneeroom, and thigh support are average. Fixed headrests are provided for rear passengers. A bright white LED cabin light illuminates the rear. For safety, the rear doors are equipped with child locks.

Front Cabin and Dashboard: The front doors also feature dual-tone trim, power window controls for all four windows, door openers, speakers, and bottle holders. The controls for the electrically adjustable side mirrors are located here. The driver’s seat comes with height adjustment and recline options. Levers for opening the fuel filler and boot are positioned below the seat. The car has ABC pedals for its manual transmission, and a lever for opening the bonnet.

Inside, the dashboard provides a clear view. The instrument cluster is fully digital, displaying various check lights, petrol and CNG fuel bars, RPM, and an MID screen with information like Trip A, Trip B, and audio details. The steering wheel, which is tilt-adjustable, features the Tata logo and controls for telephone and audio on the left side. It does not have a leather wrap. Controls for headlights and wipers are also present.

The dashboard includes a hazard light switch and AC vents with chrome accents. There’s a useful storage space on the dashboard. The music system is a non-touchscreen unit with responsive buttons, offering Bluetooth, USB, and AUX connectivity. Below the music system are the CNG to petrol converter switch and manual AC controls for fan speed and temperature. A USB port and a 12V charging outlet are also available, along with a convenient storage area for a phone or other small items. The car features a 5-speed manual gearbox. It also has a handbrake and two cup holders.

For safety, the Tiago XT CNG comes standard with two airbags, one for the driver and one for the passenger, available across all variants. The glove box is a normal type and is not cooled. The interior rearview mirror (IRVM) is adjustable, and a microphone is provided for calls. The driver’s sun visor has a ticket holder, while the passenger’s sun visor includes a vanity mirror. Grab handles are also present.

Engine Performance and Fuel Efficiency

The Tata Tiago XT CNG is powered by a 1.2-liter, 3-cylinder Revotron Petrol Engine.

  • Petrol Mode: In petrol mode, the engine produces 86 PS of power and 113 Nm of torque, delivering a mileage of 20-22 kmpl.
  • CNG Mode: When running on CNG, the power output is slightly lower at 72 PS and 95 Nm of torque, but it offers an impressive mileage of approximately 26 kmpl.

The engine bay houses the ABS with EBD unit and the battery. The bonnet includes insulation for noise reduction. The engine is BS6 Phase 2 compliant and has become more refined over time.

Safety Features and Warranty

The Tata Tiago, being a 4-star rated hatchback, comes equipped with a comprehensive set of safety features:

  • ABS with EBD
  • Dual Airbags
  • Reverse Parking Sensors
  • Speed Alert System
  • Seatbelt Warning
  • Engine Immobilizer
  • Crash Sensor

The car also comes with a warranty of 3 years or 1,00,000 kilometers, whichever comes first.

The Tata Tiago XT CNG variant, priced at an ex-showroom rate of ₹7,35,000 (around ₹8,35,000 on-road in Lucknow), offers a balanced package of safety, fuel efficiency, and practical features, making it a compelling option in its segment.
