Mahindra Thar Roxx vs Old Thar: Comprehensive Comparison, Features, and Key Changes Explained

Mahindra Thar vs. Mahindra Thar Rox: A Detailed SUV Comparison

The automotive landscape is constantly evolving, and two notable SUVs, the Mahindra Thar and the Mahindra Thar Rox, offer distinct experiences. This detailed comparison highlights the key differences and features of these vehicles, from their exterior design and dimensions to their interior comfort and technological advancements.

Exterior Design and Dimensions

Front Fascia Differences

The Mahindra Thar Rox presents a refreshed look with a new grille and updated headlamps that integrate DRLs (Daytime Running Lamps). While the MX5 variant of the Thar Rox comes with manual headlamps and wipers, the Thar Rox MX5 variant specifically includes automatic headlamps and rain-sensing wipers. Front parking sensors are also a feature of the Thar Rox. For the top-end Thar Rox model, advanced features like a 360-degree camera and ADAS (Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems) are available.

Side Profile and Wheels

In terms of length, the Thar Rox measures 4428 mm, making it significantly longer than the old Thar which is 3985 mm – a difference of 433 mm. Both SUVs are equipped with 18-inch alloy wheels, though their designs differ. The tire profiles remain consistent for both at 255/65 R18. The Thar Rox features disc brakes for enhanced stopping power. Both models share similar power antennas, ORVMs (Outside Rear View Mirrors), and footsteps. The Thar Rox proudly displays “Thar Rox” branding on its side, distinguishing it from the “Thar” branding on the old model.

Rear View Enhancements

The rear profile of the Thar Rox includes a steel spare wheel, modern LED backlights, a rear wiper, and a defogger. It also features a reverse parking camera, sensors, and reflectors. In contrast, the old Thar offers an alloy spare wheel and a defogger but lacks a rear wiper and a camera. Both vehicles are fitted with a high-mount stop lamp.

Overall Dimensions

Overall, the Thar Rox is the larger vehicle, being approximately 15 mm wider and 80 mm taller than the old Thar.

Practicality and Boot Space

Door Configuration

A significant practical distinction is the door count. The Thar Rox is a 5-door SUV, providing much easier access for passengers to enter and exit. The old Thar, being a 3-door model (driver side, passenger side, and boot), makes getting into the rear seats more challenging. Both models discussed are Rear Wheel Drive (RWD) variants, and a 4×4 option is available for both.

Fuel System

Both SUVs come with a 57-liter fuel tank capacity. The Thar Rox features a convenient internal button for opening the fuel filler cap, whereas the old Thar has a manual external opening.

Spacious Boot

The Thar Rox offers excellent boot space, capable of accommodating substantial luggage or even allowing a person to sit comfortably inside. It includes a 12V charging outlet, hooks, rear speakers, and an LED light. The old Thar, in contrast, provides very limited boot space, even with its seats folded, offering only around 100 liters.

Interior Comfort and Technology

Second-Row Experience (Thar Rox)

The Thar Rox provides a comfortable second-row experience with dual-tone door trims and leather seats. Rear passengers benefit from dedicated AC vents, a Type C USB port, and storage for mobile phones. The cabin offers excellent legroom, good thigh support, and is notably wider than the old Thar. It includes grab handles, a white LED roof light, speakers, two adjustable headrests (with one fixed in the middle), and an armrest with two glass holders. Child seat mounts are also present for safety.

Second-Row Challenges (Old Thar)

Accessing the second row of the old Thar requires folding the front seat. Once inside, legroom and knee room are restricted due to its shorter wheelbase. It lacks rear AC vents and a sunroof. The interior is simpler, without a rear roof light, which can create a cramped feeling for passengers.

Front Cabin Features (Thar Rox)

The Thar Rox dashboard features its unique branding. It includes dual-tone door trims with chrome handles and comfortable leather seats. Driver-focused features comprise an internal fuel cap release button, traction control, a fog lamp button, hill descent control, and a front parking sensor button. It comes with push-button engine start, and the top model offers a smart key. The infotainment system is a large 10.25-inch touchscreen paired with a reverse parking camera. Additional features include a bezel-less auto-dimming IRVM (Inside Rear View Mirror), a wireless charging pad, Type A and Type C USB ports, and an armrest with storage. The top model further enhances convenience with an electronic park brake, a 360-degree camera, and ADAS. Other amenities include a sun glass holder, a white LED roof light, and a sunroof. Power windows are provided on all four doors.

Front Cabin (Old Thar)

The old Thar dashboard features its traditional branding and single-tone black door trims with standard handles. It comes with fabric seats. It uses a key-start ignition and has a smaller 7-inch touchscreen. It does not include a wireless charging pad or Type A and Type C USB ports, offering only a 12V charging outlet. The IRVM is manually adjustable. It lacks power windows on the doors, with controls typically found on the central console.

Safety Features

The Thar Rox is equipped with six airbags, providing enhanced safety. The old Thar is equipped with two airbags.

Engine Options

Both the Thar Rox and the old Thar (for their 4×4 or RWD diesel variants) are available with a 2.2-liter diesel engine.
