Discover the Mahindra Thar RX MX1 Diesel: A Feature-Packed Base Model SUV
The Mahindra Thar RX is a popular choice for SUV enthusiasts, and the MX1 Diesel base model offers a surprising array of features. Despite being the entry-level variant, it comes equipped with almost everything you need, making it a compelling option for those seeking a capable and stylish vehicle without the top-tier price tag.
Significant Savings After New GST
Good news for prospective buyers! The new GST implementation brings considerable benefits on the Mahindra Thar RX.
- Diesel Model: You can now save up to ₹82,000 on the ex-showroom price. The old ex-showroom price was ₹14,29,000, which is now reduced to ₹13,47,000. On-road, after deducting an extended warranty and accessory pack, the MX1 Diesel is approximately ₹15,88,000.
- Petrol Model: For the petrol variant, expect a saving of ₹74,000 on the ex-showroom price. The old ex-showroom price was ₹12,99,000, now at ₹12,25,000. On-road, after similar deductions, the petrol model is around ₹14,54,000.
There’s an approximate on-road price difference of ₹1,34,000 between the diesel and petrol base models.
Impressive Standard Features
Even as a base model, the Mahindra Thar RX MX1 Diesel is loaded with essential and desirable features. You’ll find LED headlamps, Daytime Running Lights (DRLs), a touchscreen infotainment system, six airbags for enhanced safety, and a smart key. The only notable omission from this variant are alloy wheels, which can be added later.
Muscular Exterior Design
The Thar RX MX1 Diesel boasts a robust and commanding presence.
- Front Profile: It features the classic Mahindra badging and a new black-finished grille. The LED headlamps are standard, along with multi-functional DRLs and indicators that blink in sequence. While fog lamps are not included, they can be installed as an accessory. The muscular bumper adds to its sturdy look, and an engine guard is provided for protection. The ground clearance stands at an impressive 226 mm, making it highly capable for various terrains.
- Side Profile: From the side, the only missing element is alloy wheels, which would complete its premium look. It comes with 18-inch radial tyres (255/65 R18). The front wheels feature disc brakes. Wide black cladding runs along the sides, and the ORVMs are manually foldable with a matte black finish. The A-pillar and B-pillar are body-colored, maintaining a cohesive look. The Thar RX is now a five-door vehicle, with doors opening wide at a 90-degree angle.
- Rear Profile: The rear design is equally striking, especially in black. It includes a spare wheel (steel rim) mounted on the tailgate, standard LED taillights, and a high-mount stop lamp. The boot handle is in matte black. The new Thar RX offers significantly more boot space than its three-door predecessor, with 60-40 split-folding rear seats for added versatility.
Comfortable and Tech-Forward Interior
Step inside the Mahindra Thar RX MX1, and you’ll find a surprisingly well-equipped and comfortable cabin.
- Seating and Space: All doors open wide for easy access. The interior features fabric seats and a dual-tone door trim with power window controls for all four doors, bottle holders, and Thar branding. The cabin offers ample legroom, and grab handles are provided for easy entry and exit due to the vehicle’s height. Adjustable headrests are standard.
- Dashboard and Controls: The dashboard has a dual-tone finish and includes a touchscreen infotainment system and a push-button start/stop. You’ll find manual AC controls, rear AC vents, and a sliding armrest with storage and a Type-C USB charging port. The instrument cluster is analog, displaying RPM, speed (up to 180 km/h), fuel level, and temperature. The Multi-Information Display (MID) provides details like DPF level, trip average, mileage range, and audio information. Controls for traction control, idle start/stop, hill descent control, and headlamp leveling are conveniently placed.
- Infotainment and Connectivity: The 9-inch touchscreen supports Bluetooth, USB, and AUX connectivity for audio. While it doesn’t come with a reverse camera, it does have parking sensors, and a camera can be installed as an accessory.
- Safety and Convenience: The MX1 base model includes six airbags, enhancing occupant safety. Other features include a normal-sized glove box, speakers in various locations, a manually adjustable IRVM, a sunglass holder, and vanity mirrors in the sun visors. The floor is flat, allowing a third passenger to sit comfortably in the rear. ISOFIX child seat mounts are also present.
Powerful Engine Options
The Mahindra Thar RX offers both diesel and petrol engine choices to suit different preferences.
- 2.2L mHawk Diesel Engine: This 4-cylinder engine produces 150 BHP of power and 330 Nm of torque. It is designed to deliver a mileage of approximately 15-16 kmpl, depending on driving conditions. The diesel variant has a 57-liter fuel tank capacity, which also accommodates AdBlue.
- 2.0L mStallion Petrol Engine: The 4-cylinder petrol engine generates 160 PS of power and 330 Nm of torque. It offers a mileage of about 10-12 kmpl.
Both engines come with a 6-speed manual transmission, and an automatic option is also available in other variants. While the base model does not include a 4×4 option, it can be upgraded.
Robust Dimensions and Safety
